82% know about trade-in. Only 44% have done it.
Almost everyone knows smartphone trade-in exists, yet fewer than half have ever done one, and the distance between that awareness and action is where brands are quietly losing sales, upgrades and loyalty.
Awareness of smartphone trade-in is not the problem. 82% of consumers already know it exists. Only 44% have ever completed one. That gap is where the growth potential lies.
In our Smartphone trade-in report, we found demand for trade-in is broad and real: 87% have either traded in before or are open to it. But only 60% recall being offered a trade-in option the last time they bought a phone. Intent is running well ahead of execution, and every missed offer is a sale, an upgrade and a loyalty moment the brand never captured.
The gap also widens with age. More than 65% of 18–44s intend to trade in, dropping to roughly 50% for older consumers. Completion tells an event sharper story: 52% of 35–44s have traded in, against just 33% of 55–65s. The interest exists in every age group but conversion is higher in younger audiences.

The reasons are rarely dramatic; just a cluster of small frictions rather than one big objection: doubts about the value on offer, worries about wiping personal data, not realizing an older phone is worth anything, not knowing where to go. Each is easy to solve alone but together, they stall a customer who was otherwise ready.
For OEMs, retailers and carriers, the fix comes through making the offer land at the point of purchase, every time, rather than another awareness campaign. Proactive measures such as surfacing the trade-in value on the product page and in the basket, highlighting the price after trade-in and encouraging trade-in as the default checkout flow rather than something the customer has to hunt for, are all strong levers to improve conversion.
