The data question stopping smartphones from being traded in
Fear about personal data is one of the biggest barriers to smartphone trade-in and one of the most addressable, once erasure is made visible.
A quarter of consumers who don’t trade in their phone give the same reason: they are worried about their personal data. It’s one of the biggest barriers in the category and also one of the most addressable.
In our Smartphone trade-in report, we found that 25% of consumers cited concerns about data privacy or data wiping as a reason not to trade in. A phone holds years of photos, messages, passwords and payment details, and until customers are confident that data will be permanently removed, the safest option feels like keeping the device.
That caution translates into inertia. Rather than trade a phone in, many people hold onto it - most often as a backup, a way to keep photos, files and content they are not sure how to move elsewhere. That instinct grows with age: 55-65 year-olds are twice as likely as 18-24s to keep their old smartphone as a backup.

Figure 1: Consumers keeping their old smartphone as a backup, by age group
18-24s are the least likely to hold onto a smartphone, at 12%, rising steadily to 24% among 55-65s. Older customers are both more hesitant about data and more likely to retain devices out of caution, which makes reassurance especially valuable for that audience.
The good news is that consumers tell us what would move them: 76% say a data-wiping certificate would increase their comfort in trading in. Just clear, documented proof that personal data has been securely erased.
For OEMs, retailers and carriers, that points to a straightforward set of actions. Make data security visible across the trade-in journey rather than burying it in the terms. Provide certified data erasure as standard, with a certificate the customer can see. Offer help with backup and transfer, particularly for older customers who are unsure how to move their files. Through these measures, handling data with visible care turns a top barrier into a reason to trust the process.

Winning a sale is one thing - giving customers a reason to come back is another
The loyalty effect of trade-in is clear: 84% of consumers would buy their next smartphone from the same brand if it offered a compelling trade-in experience.
When customers underestimate the value of their old products, retailers lose value too
When customers underestimate what their old devices are worth, they opt out of trade-in altogether - our research found 28% don't participate because they assume the value is too low, the single most common barrier.
The personal data privacy question retailers need to answer before customers trade-in
For many customers, trading in a device hinges on trust - connected products hold years of personal data, and people need confidence it will be protected, transferred and securely wiped before they hand anything over.
